We finish up our HUXWRX VENTUM 762 review this week with a range report and compare gas gun and bolt gun performance when utilizing flow through technology. Do you have to pick one or the other? SILENCER SATURDAY 299: HUXWRX VENTUM 762 – Part 2
Suppressors, like life, are all about balance. Pinch off one side, and the other side will suffer. If you consider the host gun and suppressor combination to be a system, and it is, the energy released as part of the trigger, firing pin, primer, powder combination is in the form of force, heat, flash, and sound. And all of that energy has to go somewhere, leaving the division of energy up to the ammunition (powder type), host, and the suppressor. This is a rudimentary, and probably flawed, overview of the law of the conservation of energy; simply put, the amount of energy is static, all we can do is shape where it goes. (Physics teachers everywhere are checking their retirement countdown clocks.)
It is important to keep this principle in mind when you are thinking about firearm hosts and potential suppressors. Because often times what our ears perceive as being “quieter” is just a redirection of energy. For example, for years a tight exit bore diameter was the key to suppressor performance. Yet we ignored the fact that that bore constriction forced more gas down the barrel of gas and piston guns. Because we can’t eliminate energy in our system any more than we can eliminate mass in the universe, we can only reshape, redirect, or disperse it as physics allows.
The Flow Through technology from HUXWRX helps to redirect gasses forward and out the front of the suppressor, thereby reducing the blow back gasses down the barrel. While we know this is a good thing for semiautomatic firearms, how does this technology work on closed-action firearms?
HUXWRX VENTUM 762 Specifications:
We are going to use my favorite short/midrange cartridge for today’s range report, 300BLK.
I outfitted this legacy Remington Model 7 with the YHM sRx mount and muzzle device system. This is possible because the HUXWRX VENTUM is Hub-device compatible.
The gas gun platform has a nine inch barrel outfitted with the RIFLESPEED adjustable gas block.
No adjustments were needed from unsuppressed to suppressed configurations with brass landing at about the four o’clock position.
The performance of the HUXWRX VENTUM 762 in both semi-auto and full-auto settings is great. You might theoretically be able to squeeze out another decibel or two with a non Flow Through suppressor of the same size. However, you would need to make gas system adjustments to avoid blowback complications, and your ears can’t detect a 1-2 dB difference.
Somewhat surprisingly, the VENTUM 762 performed excellently on the bolt gun host, providing top-tier noise reduction. And remember, I am the most critical on two categories of suppressors: rimfire and subsonic 300BLK. My prediction was that the suppression levels wouldn’t be as good on a bolt action rifle since the need for blowback reduction is eliminated. But the latest HUXWRX model surpassed expectations.
The biggest question is, do you pick the HUXWRX FLOW 762 or the HUXWRX VENTUM 762. If you have already burned through your gun budget on your rifle, optics, and ammo, the VENTUM is about $800 cheaper with the added benefit of being able to accept a variety of mounting systems. On the other hand, the FLOW 762 is one of my favorite suppressors, being both light and quiet on a range of hosts. Choose wisely.
