First Look: Rosco 18 and 20-inch AR-15 Barrels
Rosco Manufacturing has just announced the release of two new 416R stainless steel AR-15 pattern barrels with a .223 Wylde chamber under its Purebred product line: the new Purebred 18-inch and the new Purebred 20-inch .223 Wylde SPR barrels.
Both of these new barrels are inspired by the original Mk. 12 SPR 5.56 NATO rifle from the GWOT (Global War On Terror) era. The Mk. 12 SPR series consisted of full-size AR-15 pattern rifles built by military armorers with 18-inch free-floating precision barrels. Externally similar to a flat-top receiver military M-16 rifle, these rifles had accurized barrels and magnified optics and could could accurately shoot 77-grain 5.56 NATO loads past the traditional effective firing range of standard US Government M-4 and M-16 service rifles. These days, the term SPR which originally stood for “Special Purpose Receiver” has now evolved into a catch-all phrase to describe any accurized 5.56 NATO AR-15 rifle.
In the same way, the new Rosco Manufacturing SPR barrels are intended to be used in accurized above-average rifle builds. These barrels have an SPR style contour to help with balance and accuracy retention as the bore warms up. Regardless of barrel length, both of these new barrels are rifled with a fast 1:7-inch twist which is ideal to stabilize heavier 5.56 NATO projectiles. In addition to this, both have a stepped crown. Like the original spec SPR barrels used in government rifles, both of Rosco Manufacturing new barrels can accept OPS Inc muzzle devices.
“We’re excited to announce that these two Purebred barrels are now available for purchase,” said Rosco Manufacturing President Mike D’Angelo Jr. “This barrel line is proudly made from scratch in our Rhode Island facility and is a culmination of all the lessons we’ve learned through years of making barrels for several OEM’s. These barrels are built to produce results right out of the box for any shooter that is looking to take their skills above and beyond.”
