First Look: Tanfoglio Pugio 1911 Pistol

Tanfoglio Firearms has recently launched the new Pugio, a single-stack, compact 1911 pistol in 9 mm named after the ancient Roman Pugio dagger that was once carried by legionnaires and centurions. This new pistol takes after some of the same qualities, such as sleek, purpose-driven design and lighter weight along with the inherent accuracy afforded by 1911-pattern pistols.

To save weight, the new Tanfoglio Pugio 9mm 1911 pistol is built with a fiberglass-reinforced polymer frame instead of the traditional steel or aluminum frame materials typically seen with single-stack pistols. On the flip side, polymer as a frame material has been part of several high-profile double stack 1911 designs. Joining the modernized lightweight polymer frame is a precision-CNC-cut bull barrel manufactured from a Walther-Lothar barrel blank. The Pugio is built with a one-piece steel guide rod and also incorporates a Picatinny-rail dustcover.

Tanfoglio is offering the Pugio as a standalone, iron-sight-only pistol equipped with carry/duty front and rear sights. There is also an optics-ready version of the Pugio that is cut for the popular Shield Sights RMSc optics footprint pattern, as the narrow shape of that optic mates well with the slimmer 1911 slides.
