Poltergeist Works, A.K.A. Jakub Wieczorkiewicz, has whipped up a tempting new EDC option under the Real Steel banner. This is the Vis, a compact cutter with the company’s cross-bar lock.
Smaller knives are by no means a vanishing breed, but it’s safe to say that, in the last five years or so, the blade length of the average EDC-centric knife has been trending up. Take a look at some of the modern classics in that category, like the Civivi Elementum, the Benchmade Bugout, and the Spyderco Endela – all of these knives live around the 3-inch mark in terms of edge length, and perhaps releases like these set manufacturers’ gazes on that particular size.
Hypotheses aside, the trend makes the Vis stand out, with its 2.72-inch edge length. Now, in practical terms, we’d wager that the quarter-inch difference between the Vis’s blade and the current standard won’t mean much: it can certainly chew up the bigger tasks as well as the smaller. But it has positive implications for places with stricter knife carry laws, and makes the overall package more compact in the pocket. The presence of 12C27N not only marks the Vis as a release that goes easy on the wallet, but one that won’t shame anyone with its performance either.
Turning our gaze handlewards, we see a layered construction reminisicent of the Sacra, right down to the integral steel spine component: a folded piece of steel that functions both as a liner and a backspacer beneath the Micarta or G-10 scales. Real Steel’s Axislike, which they call the crossbar lock, provides ambidextrous lock manipulation, and the deep carry pocket clip can jump to either side as well. The smaller size overall leads to a lower weight; the Vis weighs in at just 1.94 oz.
